During May 2005 Sullivan EurAsia proposed the creation of a
Transatlantic Schools Anti Bullying Initiative with the support and
financial backing of its parent
Sullivan University System
in Kentucky USA.
One of the objectives of the Transatlantic Initiative was the production of an "Initiative Report" that
was be
presented to the UK and US Governments, with its findings and
recommendations, in 2007.
The Initiative was not a Network, nor did it seek to create
anti-bullying projects itself. The Initiative was time-limited
(it was closed in October 2007 - following the production of the
Report) and was intended to be
a comprehensive technology based resource for young
people, parents, teachers and practitioners and will gather
together in one place anti-bullying projects from around the
world.
Lord William Brett agreed to Chair the Initiative. The
Initiative had two components: The Management Committee and a
Best Practices Working Group, split into a UK Group and a US
Group.
The Management Committee had a membership comprising politicians
and senior high-level advisors plus the Chairmen of the UK and
US Best Practices Working Groups. This Committee oversaw
the strategic direction of the work of the Initiative. The first
joint transatlantic meeting of the Committee was held in
London on 28 March 2006, with the next one in Washington on 26
October 2006.
The Best Practices Working Groups had a membership made up
of: practitioners in the field; young people; voluntary
organisations; local government; and National Government
Departments. These Groups gathered together the best practice
examples of anti-bullying activities in the UK and the US and
reported their findings to the Management Committee. The first meeting of the UK
Group was held on 8 December 2005.
